The Soul Surfers

" The Soul Surfers is a live band from an old Russian town Nizhny Novgorod and a brand new name on Soul & Funk Scene. The Soul Surfers play their original compositions and do it so well that soon they gonna be a new sensation on the local club scene. I love their deep and raw sound and can't wait to see them playin' LIVE at our soul dance party in St.Petersburg. Four killer 45s are already under press and will be released pretty soon in USA "

A stone funky gem that’s mighty nice all the way through! The tune’s got a popping, percolated drum part that’s almost in “Tighten Up” territory – and other instrumentation leaps around beautifully, including cool thin organ lines, tightly blasting horns, and this backyard bassline that’s subtle, but really helps shape the tune! There’s some very echoey and almost-buried vocal calls, which spur the group on even more – and the whole thing’s almost got a late 60s Florida funk vibe, which may well be the reference in the title.

Hot Peas & Butta 45 Review:
The Soul Surfers “Doin’ The Rasklad” b/w “Girl From Sao Paulo”

Early this year we conducted an interview with our good friend and 45 slinger Misha Chak from St. Petersburg Russia and during that interview we gave you some background on possibly the only Funk band coming out of Russia, The Soul Surfers. If your not familiar with the band then go back 1 year ago and read our review of there promo only cover of “The Good, The Bad & The Ugly” 7″ released under their alternate name, The Rhythm Cowboys on the Jackpot label as a Fun City Shingaling exclusive.

Well it seems that the band has made their way a little closer to the States by releasing a new 7″ on Ubiquity Records which is a double sided scorcher covering two sides of the spectrum, the “Play Funk” side and the “Play Jazz” side with the Jazz side being a total shock to us because we never knew they could go that route. The Funk side is the Surfers standard of heavy drums, organs and deep baselines that will definitely work on the floor. The flip is a toe tapping, swinging jazz number with bouncing drums (break included), guitar, piano rolls and more which really shows that the band can step out of their Funk influenced realm and into other territories.

Russia isn’t known for its clam-tight authentic funk acts. But that’s what makes this limited double-A 7” extra special. Two original instrumentals, The Soul Surfers play with all the fuzzy distortion and raw grace as an early Booker T & The MGs. “Doin’ The Rasklad” translates to ‘doing the strut’ and it lives up to its name in every way thanks to heavy handed Hammond action, a low swung bass groove and some prominently mixed drum work. “Girl From Sao Paolo” is just a touch softer thanks the minor keys, but the triplet rim shots and splashing cymbals ensure plenty of tight-knit jive business. A really interesting release.
